Tumblr friends…I have a favor. This photo is entered in a photo contest with the Canadian Wildlife Federation. If you like the photo and feel so inclined, I would be grateful for any votes you could help muster up for the salmon snacking mom and cub.
Click the link, scroll through the images, select the bears (NJ Wight) and then scroll to the bottom of all of the pics to click Vote! You may have to scroll around a little… I thank you for your consideration…

BTW, completely fell off the rocks and onto my ass in the river in order to get this ethereal shot. Just sayin’. (Lens and camera were extended out of the water which made the landing even harder…)
Head in the clouds.
This Day in History: June 13, 2010. I was in the Masai Mara in Kenya and it was very late in the day. We came upon a den of hyena and the pups were very curious about us, a couple of them wandering quite close to the truck to take a whiff. (After the day in the sun, heat and dust I am sure they got a nose-full from me…)
More pups from the clan…
shy pup and snoozing pup
And if you are interested in hyenas and why zoologists once considered them to be hermaphrodites, I have written more about them here:
Hey-thanks for posting! Serves me right for posting to 500px before tumblr. Now i have to delete it from my own queue. :-) I believe this is a Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, but would happily stand corrected! It was taken in Chriqui province, Panama.

Veoila Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award is probably the most prestigious photography awards competition for wildlife. It is sponsored by the British History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine and holds a 10,000 GBP prize. I entered in 2009 and had one image make it to the semi-finals. This past year, four of my images made it to the semi final round! Approximately 44,000 images were entered with 12,000 making to the semi-finals and 1100 making to the final round. I am pretty excited I made it that far on 4 categories given how new all this is for me.
You really should check out the gallery on-line. Or if you are in London, go to the exhibit. http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/whats-on/temporary-exhibitions/wpy/onlineGallery.do
These are my semi-final round photos. If you click on the images you will see the categories. Thanks to so many of you here on tumblr who have been so encouraging of me pursuing my photography. I truly appreciate it.
So, as I am exploring what I should do when I grow up-again-I have been trying to write a children’s book. It is for young kids, but with the intent of addressing interests as they get a little older. It is hopefully for whimsical parents as well. Of course my friends are encouraging, but they also drink my wine and eat my food, so hardly unbiased. I am asking you wonderful followers for help-and honesty.
The format is still being worked out but there would be a poem and a picture, and then some additional narrative information about the animal. The layout is playful and colourful (which I can’t show in a tumblr post) The narrative page may pull out or you may lift the picture to see it. Don’t know. The next two posts are, appropriately, the first drafts for the RHINO. First the poem. Then the narrative. And the poems are more fun if you read them out loud-I KNOW you people aren’t shy, so try it!
OK. Now I will just nervously wait to hear from anyone …
Sum of the Parts
One of the things I love about photographing wildlife are observing the details of animals closeup.
