A lioness patiently watched two ostrich grazing towards her. Once they got closer she slowly got up and started slinking towards them. It was really a half-hearted attempt though, as she lay back down for a nap half way to the kitchen. Cats are amazing when they “slink!” (Please enlarge)

Here is our little cub friend again. What was interesting about seeing this mom and her 2 cubs was they were keeping themselves close but hidden from the nearby pride. Our guide, who knew these lions well, said that she had to keep the cubs away from the pride as their dominant male was being challenged by 2 new males. There was another set of cubs in that pride, who, the ranger said, could have been fathered by the challenging males and therefore would be safe. (They would not risk killing their own.) But this lioness’ cubs were definitely fathered by the incumbent male, making them very vulnerable as challenging males will kill the cubs of a dominant male so they can then mate with the female.
I hope you have enjoyed this little lion family as an interim break from my crankiness about the followers. As of right now, I am returning to regular programing with complete disregard for broken dashboards. Thanks for tuning in. And welcome to all you fabulous new followers.

This is was the first male lion I ever met. We were in Grumetti in the Serengeti and this 6 year old male was very special–he was missing part of his right back leg. You can see the stump, the result of being caught in a trap outside the park. Amazing that he was still doing well, albeit a little thin. His pride was still supporting him as clearly his hunting abilities are challenged. (Poor guy is missing a paw and then I go cut off his tail…)
