I had an amazing day shooting at Fauna Wednesday. The chimps were enjoying time on the islands after the long winter indoors.

Sophie is quite old and her health has been suffering a little lately. This was my first chance to photograph her as she has always been inside. I am struck by how much character her tiny face has. It is astonishing to me. She looks like a little old lady. I am so grateful I get a chance to volunteer here.

This is Ms. Sophie, the matriarch of the monkey house at Fauna. She is a charming cinnamon capuchin with such an incredibly emotional face. She shares the house with Newton, a rhesus macaque.

I envy them their tree-houses. I took this while up in a cherry picker. Getting up 50 ft at eye level was quite something.

A letter from Fauna’s founder Gloria Grow about Pepper’s final days. It is really quite exceptional.

It was a very sad day yesterday and I am sorry to tell you all that Pepper passed away Wednesday evening with her chimp family around her. Thank-you all who showed your love when I posted her picture earlier this week. Fauna will be releasing details on their blog and website in the coming days and I will let you know.
I came to know Pepper and her 11 chimp family members in the past months volunteering as a photographer at Fauna. It has been a remarkable experience and I can’t quite find the words yet to describe what it has been like getting to know the chimps. Pepper was indeed special. She loved her space outside and when I would arrive early and unload my gear she would often be up above keeping an eye on me. I enjoyed those few quiet moments speaking to her.
Last week when her condition became known to me I was so privileged to get to spend some quiet time with her. I can’t imagine the grief that her human and chimp family are feeling over her loss. I am grateful to have known her and am relieved she passed away peacefully with her friends around her, no longer in a laboratory cage.

I think Spock is checking out the ants…or maybe he dropped his wallet? ;-)

I do love Spock and his pink freckled face. If yo have not already done so, please pop by faunachimps and check out his friends.

Don’t be fooled by his innocence. See that yellow pail? Well, my bff Toby here had a nice drink and then about 45 seconds after I took this shot he wandered closer and gave me a good squirt from between his gorgeous lips. :-)
Please visit the chimps blog and give them some love!

Meet Spock. What a gorgeous face. I have had an opportunity to shoot him on a few occasions and he is delightful to spend time watching. Spock will use a utensil if he is given food in a bowl. He also prefers cooked food.  This struck me as odd at first, but one of the things I have come to learn from the remarkable caregivers at Fauna is that if the chimp grew up with certain foods or behaviors, then it is something that often needs to continue for them to help manage their transition to sanctuary care. Sadly, as Spock was brought up human, not chimp (part of an experiment to treat chimps like human children) it makes sense that he learned to eat cooked food and to use utensils.
Check out faunachimps.tumblr if you want to learn more about these remarkable animals.

Oh Spock-you take our breath away !
Born in captivity on February 9, 1976, in Norman, Oklahoma, Spock was sold to The University of Montreal to be raised as a human child as part of a research study.
With no chimpanzee mother of his own, he had to trust a human mother. He grew very close to other chimpanzee children in his human and un-natural environment but as usual with this kind of cross fostering experiment, when the research ended his fate included separation from the humans he grew to know and love.
He was then sent to a zoo to live “on exhibit” as part of the “animal collection” for the next 25 years until his rescue by Fauna.  He lives in peace now and is quite a personable and affectionate guy. He enjoys the company of other chimps and is often found grooming and attending to his companions.
Please visit us and read more about Spock-we know you will be as enchanted by him as we are!
