So today I spent some time with a moorhen on the marsh. Cool looking bird with a red and yellow beak and lime green legs. It’s a very common water bird belonging to the Rail family and is pretty mouthy and I have no idea if it is directed at me. He seems a little shy and likes to stay close to the reeds, but certainly his red honker announces his arrival from between the vegetation. But my favorite attribute of the moorhen is his nickname, Skitty Coots, which I have now adopted for myself.
Also got to see a fabulous Green Heron fishing today! Wow-that’s a stealth bird. Check out the slinky extendable neck. His patience teaches me patience. Watching through the lens, which blocks any distractions, you start to follow his fishing rhythm and pick up his cues. Then hopefully, when he darts forward you can hit the shutter fast enough to capture a burst! I got lucky this time, but he didn’t catch anything.
All in all, a great day. I will hopefully see much more of the green heron now that he has returned to the marsh.
Have a good one!
