Which hippo do you suppose was lovingly referred to as Michael Jackson by the rangers on the Mara…?

Breathe

This photo is a meditation reminding me to breathe, which I often forget to do. It grounds me when I find I am having one of those days with a lot of big heavy exhales with a lack of o2 coming in.

Most people have no idea what they are looking at when they first see this photo. I took this in Tanzania standing on a bridge in Lake Manyara National Park. It was like playing Whack-A-Mole, except my camera was the mallet and the hippos were the moles. I never knew where they would pop up to snort some air and quickly sink back down into the murk. It was a focusing nightmare and an excellent exercise in patience! For me, it was a completely different composition for a hippo photo and I felt it truly brought home the animals environment.

I needed a breathing reminder today…

Sunset on the Mara river listening to the great Hippo Orchestra–28 tuba players out of tune. Nothing quite like it.

This just makes me laugh. I kept putting my face against the underground hippo window at the San Diego Zoo and this hippo eventually came up and pressed his face right up against the glass. I love his squished smile and the air bubbles on his bristly whiskers.
