So, I go out to the woods one afternoon and came across an incredible moment in nature–a spider dining on a dragonfly caught in its web. At first glance I just thought it was Mr. Spidey curled up having a snooze. Although I could see the dried wings of a dragon fly caught in the web, which is something I see quite often, with my naked eye I couldn’t make out what was going on. It wasn’t until I got in close with my 100M macro lens that I realized the spider actually had the head of the dragonfly in his arms and was clearly having dinner. From one angle it actually looked like the spider was cradling the dragonfly’s head…
I love the little strings of web you can see in the background.
Spider Magic
This was certainly NOT what I saw through the lens. I knew it was a curious sight, but it came alive once I saw it large. Light is magic.
Along Came a Spider…

Today was a first. I have never taken a macro lens out into the forest. Any of the insects I have done, have generally been done with a telephoto or telephoto zoom. When I have tried macro in the past (I have a 60M Canon macro) I just did not have the patience or understanding of DOF etc. But with the last year of experience and experiments it was time to try again. (I confess, Clusterpod’s insect images certainly helped motivate me. ;-)
So here are some shots from my maiden voyage into the land of spiders. How can something that makes me so crazy when it is crawling in my house, provide such endless entertainment in front of a camera!
