Because the insulating properties of their feathers eventually breakdown, Jackass penguins molt once a year and for this 21-day molt cycle they are land-bound. To physically survive, they eat like crazy for 5 weeks before in order to increase fat stores. Psychologically, I am not sure how they prepare for the feather name-calling and ridicule. Penguins can be so cruel… ;-)
This was my first mature male lion–the 3-legged guy I wrote about previously. He was contently sleeping in tall grass when we came upon him and as I got a closer look, I was fascinated with the notches in his ear. (Enlarge for a better look)
