Because the insulating properties of their feathers eventually breakdown, Jackass penguins molt once a year and for this 21-day  molt cycle they are land-bound. To physically survive, they eat like crazy for 5 weeks before in order to increase fat stores. Psychologically, I am not sure how they prepare for the feather name-calling and ridicule. Penguins can be so cruel… ;-)

Tuesday’s Tail. Is it me or does that poop-chute appear to be smiling?

This was my first mature male lion–the 3-legged guy I wrote about previously. He was contently sleeping in tall grass when we came upon him and as I got a closer look, I was fascinated with the notches in his ear. (Enlarge for a better look)

Too all my fabulous followers who see my photos in their magic glass–I thank you for your daily encouragement!

Back by popular demand…Tuesday’s Tail!

Woody Wednesday! Come on: up–down. Flex the tail. Keep those skinny arms bent. Stop watching that chick-a-dee… Ten more big guy.
Other redheads to admire:

We got snow today and my feet are cold. I want a set of these…
njwight:

The lovely legs of a lynx-these unusually large and well-furred, snowshoe-like feet with webbed toes, allow the lynx to move over deep snow with ease. These are the original UGGS…and only animals should be wearing them.

This was his pal.

njwight:

The glorious male African Orange-Bellied parrot. I only saw it once in Kenya, but so glad to have seen it.

Junkyard Wars: The Antelope Edition
Looking like it was cobbled together from spare parts and by far the oddest looking antelope roaming the plains of east Africa, the Eastern White-bearded Wildebeest. This was shot in Ndutu, Tanzania while I was following the migration. How something so goofy and illogical looking can be so graceful and powerful in motion is one of nature’s little surprises.
